P3 Coastguard Visit.
We had a visit from Mark who works for The Coastguard Service. It is a Service which runs alongside the Police, Fire and Ambulance Services. It was established over 200 years ago when they mostly dealt with smuggling and taxes! Nowadays they deal with saving lives.
Mark showed us what he would wear when he works and the special dry suit he wears when going into the water in rivers and the sea.
They rescue people from cliffs, loughs, lakes, rivers and seas. They also deal with dangerous items and toxic waste that can be washed up on the beaches. He showed us old World War II bomb cases, flare boxes, highly toxic plastic barrels and other containers. Mark told us how to stay safe on the beach and how to call the Coastguard in an emergency.
